Fay School Announces Opening of Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Classes for Fall 2010

Download the brochure here

Fay School has announced its plan to expand its program by offering Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes, starting in the fall of 2010. With the exciting addition of the earliest grades, Fay will now prepare children in a natural, thoughtful way to enter the first grade and, thereafter, to continue in the full Fay School program through grade nine.

The Pre-K and Kindergarten learning process will focus on an "inquiry-based" method, in which teachers lead a dynamic and student-centered curriculum driven by the joy of discovery and purposeful play. In keeping with Fay's mission, students will benefit from a program that responds to the interests of each child. The development of important social and cognitive skills, along with an appropriate curricular emphasis on collaborative and creative expression, will lead naturally to Fay's third grade and beyond-an investment in the long-term success of our youngest community members.

Teaching and learning for our new grades, along with the existing grades one and two, will be supported by a new, "green" educational facility on Middle Road, for which ground was broken in spring of 2009. Designed to incorporate the renovated 1819 Goodnow House in a comfortable complex with the look and feel of a New England village, the new building will provide a vibrant, nurturing, and safe environment in which students will learn actively, play creatively and collaboratively, and interact positively and constructively with peers and adults. Custom-designed outdoor play spaces will encourage hands-on learning and imaginative play, while additional natural playscapes will connect children to the environment. We are proud that this project will be an applicant for LEED Certification.

To accommodate the needs of each child, Pre-Kindergarten will be offered in both half-day and full-day programs. Kindergarten will follow a full-day schedule, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Supplemental, supervised programs before and after the school day will be offered to children in both grades.

Fay's decision to expand its program at this time is the result of thoughtful analysis on the part of the School's Board of Trustees and administrative team. For a number of years, current and prospective Fay parents have expressed their interest in having Fay offer Pre-K and Kindergarten classes; in response, the School has thoroughly examined the merits of adding these programs, weighing the benefits of such a change. Consequently, the Board identified the addition of Pre-K and Kindergarten as a key initiative in Fay's strategic plan and incorporated a new facility for this program into the campus master plan.

Fay's Head of School, Rob Gustavson, believes that the benefits of this change will be significant. "By adding Pre-K and Kindergarten to our existing program, Fay will be able to provide a complete Pre-K through 9th grade experience for our students and their families," he says. He adds, "It will provide an engaging and meaningful educational experience for young children and will offer families the opportunity to build a longer and even more meaningful relationship with Fay as their children grow from preschool into their elementary and middle school years."
