Teams

Athletics plays an integral part of the Fay School mission to educate the whole child his/her fullest potential in preparation for a productive and fulfilled life.

Fay School Athletics serves as a source of tradition and pride for its students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends and community. We strive to create an environment through physical education and athletics that contributes to the physical, mental, emotional, and social health and development of every student. The emphasis of our program is based on dedication, desire and effort, rather than winning at all costs.

Fay School's athletic program offers a wide range of sports and activities to choose from, and as many levels of teams and intramural groups as we have interest for. Most Fay teams are chosen through tryouts and cuts; the goal of the tryout process is always to place children on the teams or in the groups that are appropriate for them. Fay teams are noted for the good sportsmanship they bring to their games. We host annual tournaments in basketball, wrestling, and tennis, and many of our teams participate in tournaments hosted by other schools.

Fay's indoor athletic facilities include two full-sized basketball courts, volleyball/basketball/gymnastics room, wrestling room, weight room, training room, dance room, theater, darkroom, woodworking room, ski room, two coaches' rooms, two team rooms, two large equipment rooms, many large storage areas, and a small kitchen for hosting functions.

Fay's outdoor athletic facilities include nine athletic fields, eight tennis courts, a swimming pool, an on-campus cross country course, and a trap-shooting facility. Our two hockey teams use the rinks at the New England Sports Center on weekdays and at St. Mark's School on Saturday mornings. Our golfers and squash players also use the facilities at St. Mark's, which is virtually across the street. Our skiers use Ski Ward in Shrewsbury.

Fay School is extremely fortunate to have so many facilities. In the fall, we can host five soccer games, two field hockey games, a football game, and a cross country race at the same time. In the winter, we can host four basketball games, two hockey games, a volleyball game, and a wrestling meet at the same time. In the spring, we can host five baseball/softball games, four lacrosse games, two tennis matches, and a track meet at the same time. Because of these facilities, we have about 60% home games.

The academic terms at Fay parallel the sports seasons; thus, we have fall, winter, and spring academic terms that end just after the sports seasons. In the fall and winter, the academic day ends at 3:00 on practice days and at 2:25 on game days, which are Wednesdays and Fridays. In those terms, practices end at 4:30. In the winter term, the academic day ends at 2:30 on practice days and at 2:00 on game days. In the winter, most practices end by 4:45, but the two top basketball teams and the volleyball team go until 5:15. There are two late buses that leave at 5:00 every day all year.
