Posted on 2/19/2008 By Bill Claire. Fay School and Saigon South International School Collaborate on the 2008 NAIS 20/20 Challenge.

FOVEO

This is the third year we have participated in the NAIS program. In 2006 we were finalists (working with Beacon School in the Philippines) for our solution to the world problem, Education for All. Working again with Beacon in 2007, our team was a finalist for our solution to the world problem, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Loss. This could be our year! Below is a timeline of our efforts in 2008.

10/30: Fay School joins with the Saigon South International School in Vietnam as partners for this years upcoming Challenge 20/20 Contest. Fay has placed as finalists during the first two years of this NAIS program, in 2006 for their solution to the world problem, "Education for All, " and in 2007 for their solution to the world problem, "Biodiversity and Ecosystem Loss." Having chosen to address the issue of "Natural Disaster Avoidance and Mitigation,” we are hoping that the third time is the charm!

1/15: After months of online collaboration through video chats and a specially designed wikispace, Fay's 20/20 Challenge Team completes its collaborative work with Saigon South International School. The students created a socially conscious business model that aims to raise awareness and funds for natural disaster relief. The product line is called “Foveo” which means to support and nurture in Latin.

1/20: Fay holds Natural Disaster Awareness Week. This includes morning meeting presentations, selling Foveo products at break, an essay contest, and Friday night awareness activity. Our website is launched (visit: www.fayschool.org/fay/foveo) that includes a business plan, product offering and three public service announcements.

1/25: Board Presentation. Trustee enthusiasm leads to spontaneous "passing of the hat" and the raising of an unsolicited and generous donation. Board support for the program and encouragement for the social entrepreneurship at the core of the project is inspiring.

1/29: Submission of the NAIS 20/20 project; Team Fay and SSIS cross our fingers and hope for the best!

2/5: Congratulations sent to team leaders Greg Mertz and Ruheena Razvi from NAIS, Pat Bassett, and 20/20 Program Coordinator, Ioana Suciu. NAIS response for the work accomplished by our students is overwhelming. In an email, Pat Basset, President of NAIS had this to say: "Ioana Suciu just showed me the project Fay did for the Challenge 20/20 Program, partnership with the international school in Vietnam: Truly an extraordinary project. My compliments to the teacher and students who participated and to the whole school that obviously supported this amazing effort. I love the social entrepreneurship demonstrated by the project’s products: Have shared it all already with my leadership team at NAIS. Do you have the capacity and interest to sell the candy bars and/or water at the Annual Conference in NYC? If so, we’ll see at our end if that’s possible. Regardless, my hat is off to Fay School. I’m using both this project and the Rube Goldberg Competition as examples in my presentations around the country and the world of the "right-brained future.'"

2/8: NAIS expressed an interest to purchase and distribute Foveo products at the Global Education Summit at the end of February, highlighting Fay's work. Still no word on whether or not we have won, but we are hopeful!
