Course Descriptions
Programs for Elementary School Students:
Beginning Reading
Beginning Reading introduces a phonics-based approach designed to help students master beginning decoding skills such as consonant and vowel sounds. Using a lab class format, students participate in both group and individual lessons designed to introduce them to various literary genres, expand vocabulary, master sight words, and understand select homophones, synonyms, and antonyms. (Recommended for emergent readers)
Intermediate Reading
Intermediate reading students have mastered basic decoding skills and are ready to advance their phonemic awareness. In group lessons, students deepen their understanding of literature as they learn to identify story elements, find the main idea, draw conclusions, and compare and contrast stories and characters. Through reading journals, students practice written expression with a special focus on grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary building. In daily student-teacher conferences, students follow an individualized phonics program. (Recommended for students reading at a second or third grade level)
Advanced Reading
Advanced Reading students extend their reading and writing abilities through reading age appropriate novels and journaling. Students explore literature through the study of setting, mood, themes, and symbols. Supplemental lessons in parts of speech, writing conventions, vocabulary, and spelling occur during group and individual lessons. (Recommended for students reading at or above a 4th grade level)
Research and Writing
Students are guided through the research and writing process to produce a paper and presentation on a topic of their choice. Students receive direct instruction in research skills, such as locating reliable sources of information, using online databases and citation tools, as well as an introduction to academic writing and public speaking.
(For elementary students grades 4 and up)
Math Fundamentals
This course emphasizes developing number sense, pattern recognition, and basic mathematical operations using whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Grade level problem solving and operations are also emphasized.
(Recommended for students entering grades 2 and 3)
Math Workshop
This course focuses on grade-level curriculum depending on the needs of the students enrolled. Emphasis is on number sense and operations, patterns, geometry, measurement, data analysis, and problem solving.
(Recommended for students entering grades 4 and 5)
Programs for Middle School Students
Summer Reading for Middle Schoolers
Using assigned summer reading as a basis for instruction, students work to enhance understanding of themes and literary devices and build vocabulary. Guided writing assignments help to bolster expository writing skills. Students will be assigned to individual or small group classes according to summer reading lists. A six-session minimum enrollment (per book) is required for individual tutorials.
Middle School Research and Writing
Students are guided through the research and writing process to produce a paper and presentation on a topic of their choice. In addition to developing research skills using Fay’s research road, students practice academic writing and public speaking. Supplemental lessons in study skills develop students’ skills in note-taking, time management, organization of time and materials, following directions, and test-taking.
Foreign Language Study at Fay Summer Institute
Foreign language courses are a session-long accelerated introduction to the target language designed to prepare students for foreign language study at Fay or their own school. Students attend class in the morning, usually from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Requests for the afternoon session at Fay Day Camp for students in one of the language courses will be accommodated as space allows.
Summer Latin
The Summer Latin course is designed to meet the individual needs of each student regardless of prior Latin experience. The course does focus principally on beginner and intermediate Latin students and provides students either an introduction to the language or a refresher of past material. The curriculum is based on the fundamental tenets of reading, writing, and translating. Students will learn proper Classical Latin pronunciation. They will also learn the various grammatical concepts and be exposed to the unique syntax of the language.
Introductory Spanish
This course covers basic vocabulary, including greetings, farewells, time, weather, date, cardinal and ordinal numbers, family, and expressions of place. A dozen of the most common present tense verbs are taught. Points of grammar include pronouns, contractions, possession, and idiomatic expressions. Cultural awareness, with a special emphasis on Spain and Mexico, is developed through map study and projects. Active participation is encouraged and facilitates the development of speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.
Introductory French
This course introduces students to the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Listening comprehension and the use of conversational patterns of French speech are emphasized. Elementary grammar and reading materials are also introduced. Basic vocabulary, including greetings, farewells, expressions of health, time, weather, date, numbers, family, classroom objects, personal desires, and requests is covered. Regular verbs in the present tense are studied as are idiomatic expressions.
Mandarin I
This course is an introduction to the Chinese language and culture. Our primary goal is to teach communication in both spoken and written Chinese. Our aim is to help students use Chinese inside and outside the classroom setting. The Chinese phonetic system (Pinyin) will be introduced at the beginning of the course.
Mandarin II
This course will help students expand from Mandarin I to continue to develop the four skills of listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Many of the grammatical constructions introduced in Mandarin I will be reviewed in this course with increasing sophistication in style and usage, and the level of language required to carry out linguistic tasks is more advanced.
