Five Tips for Planning a Great Staycation

Five Tips for Planning a Great Staycation

Sometimes, there's just no place like home. You get to skip the hassle of long airport lines, overbooked flights, and crowded resorts. Plus, with a bit of planning, a staycation can be just as relaxing as a vacation getaway - maybe even more so! If you choose to stay local this February Break, here are a few tips for planning a memorable and fun week with the family.

1. Enjoy the Great Outdoors

February is a great time to explore New England, with lots of options for outdoor entertainment. Take the kids skiing at a local mountain, tubing, or ice skating on an outdoor rink. A morning of ski school for the kids can mean a couple of hours of free skiing or relaxation in the lodge for the grownups!

2. Mix up the Dinner Routine

Turn the age-old question of “What’s for Dinner” into tonight’s entertainment. Pick a night and serve only family favorites for dinner, host a dinner-time joke-telling contest, or plan dinner and a movie where the meal matches the film - for example, Lady and The Tramp accompanied by spaghetti and meatballs!

3. Camp Out Indoors

Ever wish you could camp out without the mosquitos? This is your chance! Set up tents in the living room and let the kids create a campsite for the night. They will be so excited that you are going to join them on this adventure. Turn out the lights, turn off the technology, and plan some fun games and activities that you can do as a family. Don’t forget the S’mores!

4. Design Challenge

If your kids love to get lost in the building and creating process, give them a design challenge to stretch their imagination. See who can build a paper airplane that flies the farthest, craft the tallest tower out of straws and mini marshmallows, or fling an item the farthest with a catapult made from rubber bands and plastic spoons. Be creative with the prizes so that everyone’s creativity is celebrated.

5. Get Creative

As they say, planning is everything. Give some thought ahead of time into making the week extra special. If your family usually takes a beach vacation but isn’t traveling this year, find a way to bring the beach to them. Surprise the kids with an inflatable pool set up in the basement, a couple of beach chairs, a plastic palm tree, and some tropical drinks. Not only will the kids be entertained by their “tropical paradise,” but they will also remember all the effort that you put into making their time at home unique and fun.
