Meet the Coaches
This fall's Friday Night Lights games featured Fay's varsity field hockey and boys A soccer teams. Meet the coaches who guide and inspire these teams.
Meet the Coach: Heidi Qua, Varsity Field Hockey
Heidi Qua has been a cornerstone of Fay’s field hockey program for 20 years, coaching at both the JV and varsity levels. Her dedication and love for the sport have been critical to the program’s success, which has produced not only strong teams but also players who have gone on to excel at the collegiate level. “I tell my athletes all the time that, more than anything, I hope to instill in them a passion for the sport that they’ll carry with them,” she shares.
One of Heidi’s greatest joys is watching players grow within the program, starting at the 5-6 level and eventually contributing to the varsity team. She intentionally builds camaraderie between the Upper and Lower School players so that students can see their path continuing in Fay field hockey. Every season, she creates “Field Hockey Families” within the program, comprising a mixture of students from grades five through nine. Every few weeks, they’ll stay on campus to work on skills together. “They get a chance to really know each other, and the older students mentor the younger players.” One of Heidi’s favorite memories from the fall season was seeing the 5-6 field hockey players lined up along the sidelines at Friday Night Lights with homemade signs they had made to cheer on the older players in their field hockey family, noting, “It was really sweet and showed how connected our program is.”
Meet the Coach: Willie Waters, Varsity A Soccer
Willie Waters probably can’t remember a fall when he wasn’t on a soccer field as a player or a coach. After a collegiate soccer career captaining the Bowdoin College team, he stepped directly onto the sidelines, coaching girls varsity soccer at Kent for a year before returning to his alma mater, Brooks School. At Brooks, Willie spent a dozen years coaching alongside longtime coach Dusty Richard (who also coached Willie as a player) and took over the program when Dusty retired in 2019. During Willie’s coaching tenure at Brooks, the boys 1st team won three ISL and two New England championships.
Willie found no shortage of talented players when he arrived at Fay this fall, and as a former college player and high school coach, he is uniquely positioned to prepare his players to play in high school and beyond. One area of focus is helping players find the critical balance between standing out individually while demonstrating versatility. “I keep telling the kids that no coach wants to hear them say that they only play one position,” he notes. “Versatility translates all the way through.”
Under his guidance, Fay’s team had a strong season, finishing 9-2-1. However, Willie’s true passion lies in witnessing his players’ growth, both individually and as a team. “I love seeing kids feel they can be fully themselves on the soccer field and watching the evolution of a team from start to finish.”
